Regulations for people with disabilities to obtain driving licences

People with disabilities have to go through the following further steps in order to obtain a driving licence: 1. To obtain a (trainee) driving license a special medical examination implemented by a doctor (who is recognized by the Road Traffic Office) to determine driving capacity is needed 2. Driving practice has to be completed with a driving instructor who has vehicles with appropriate modifications 3. Once a person with disabilities successfully passed the examination the Road Traffic Offices can impose individual restrictions on driving licences. Please note: The respective cantonal Road Traffic Office is responsible for issuing driving licences.

PART 2 - PARKING CARDS

Eligibility for disability parking cards

All public parking facilities (cities and villages) have reserved parking spaces for persons with disabilities, marked in yellow with a wheelchair symbol.

Extended time limit for on-street parking

Switzerland has various parking zones, which means the following for people with a disability parking card:

– in time unlimited parking in carparks
– parking for a maximum of three hours in places that are signalled or marked as a no-parking zone (parking restrictions must be respected)
– parking for a maximum of two hours in pedestrian priority zones (Begegnungszonen); the same authorization applies in pedestrian zones(Fussgängerzonen) if driving in the zone is exceptionally permitted
The charging of parking fees in public car parks depends on local regulations.

The same concessions available to individuals with a disability visiting Switzerland. All residents of member states of the International Transport Forum (ITF) and who has a valid disability parking card issued by residence country is eligible for a reciprocal recognition of parking cards
